Rebuilding a Content Strategy From Zero

Rebuilding a Content Strategy From Zero

Most content strategies don't fail because the writing is bad. They fail because nobody revisited the plan after the business changed.

Start with an audit, not a calendar

Before touching a content calendar, I pull every piece published in the last 12 months and score it against three questions:

  • Did it rank, or get shared, or convert — anything measurable?
  • Does it still match who we're selling to today?
  • Would a competitor's version of this be better?

Anything that fails all three gets archived, not "improved." Trying to salvage dead content wastes more time than starting fresh.

Rebuild around three pillars, not fifty topics

A content strategy with fifty priorities has zero priorities.

I narrow every rebuild down to three pillars that map directly to business goals — usually one for awareness, one for consideration, and one for retention. Everything we publish has to serve one of them, or it doesn't get made.

Ship, measure, adjust monthly

The plan is a hypothesis, not a contract. I review performance every month and I'm not precious about cutting a pillar that isn't working after one real test — three months of data, not three weeks.

That's the whole system. No fifty-tab spreadsheet required.
